Visiting a collection
What to expect on your first exchange
An exchange is a working placement, not a tour. Here is roughly how one runs, from the point your dates are confirmed to the survey that lands a year later.
Before you travel
Confirm your dates directly with your host, and check whether accommodation is provided. Most collections will ask for proof of your current role and a reference from your section head.

On arrival
You will normally spend the first day on an induction: site safety, emergency procedures, and an introduction to the section you are joining. Bring your own boots and waterproofs.
During the exchange
Keep a short daily log. It makes the post-exchange survey far easier to complete, and hosts often ask for a summary of what you found useful.
